CIssues to be concerned about in the new season: Diseases – building disease prevention facilities in shrimp farming
According to a report by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, as of March 15, the total damaged aquaculture area was more than 1,897 hectares, down 61% over the same period in 2020; in which, the damage on brackish water shrimp was nearly 1,713.5 ha, accounting for 90.3% of the total damaged aquaculture area and accounting for nearly 0.4% of the total shrimp farming area of the country.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Long, Deputy Director of the Department of Animal Health, in the first 3 months of 2021, shrimp diseases occurred with many different types of diseases. Mr. Long forecast that the shrimp farming area could increase sharply and the risk of disease in the coming time would be very high. The main reason is that dangerous pathogens are left in many farming areas that can invade and cause disease in farmed shrimp. In addition, adverse factors such as temperature, high salinity, rapid increase in environmental changes, and extremes can adversely affect shrimp growth, underdevelopment, and weak resistance. on the other hand, changing environmental conditions facilitate the development of pathogens, causing diseases for shrimp.
According to Mr. Long, the shrimp farming industry in the past year, with an area of more than 33,000 hectares of damage, could not determine the cause. This is because people and local officials do not organize to take samples of the disease to determine the factors that cause damage, so there is no way to thoroughly solve the problem for the people.
Shrimp farming is increasingly focused, at present, to improve productivity and value, many scientific and technical advances have been applied, many successful farming models have been replicated. However, in the opinion of a shrimp farmer, management agencies need to tighten to control inputs in shrimp farming, especially seed and materials. This is the key to a successful farming. At the same time, in the context of increasingly complex climate change as today, mastering the change of environmental factors is very important to contribute to preventing epidemics from occurring.
To accomplish this, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has developed and submitted to the Prime Minister for approval the National Plan to prevent and control some dangerous diseases and epidemics of farmed aquatic animals in the period of 2021 – 2025. According to Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien, this is an important legal basis for provinces and cities to allocate budgets and resources for implementation. On this basis, the provinces will allocate resources, build a team of aquatic veterinary staff to monitor disease prevention and control, thereby propagating for farmers to implement standard farming procedures. At the same time, gradually build biosafety farming areas to meet market requirements. On March 24, 2021, the Prime Minister signed and promulgated Decision No. 434/QD-TTg approving the National Plan for prevention and control of a number of dangerous diseases on farmed aquatic products, period 2021 – 2030.
